Establishment of National Turmeric Board (NTB)

The establishment of the National Turmeric Board (NTB) in Nizamabad, Telangana, marks a significant achievement for turmeric farmers, fulfilling a nearly two-decade-long demand.

  • The demand for the Board started in 2006, advocating for remunerative prices and an exclusive board akin to the Spices, Tobacco, and Silk Boards.

Turmeric Cultivation and Export

  • Turmeric is extensively cultivated in Nizamabad and parts of north Telangana along the Godavari river.
  • The Board aims to boost exports of around 30 varieties of turmeric from 20 states including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Meghalaya.
  • In 2023-24, India cultivated turmeric on 3.05 lakh hectares, producing 10.74 lakh tonnes, and exported 1.62 lakh tonnes valued at $226.5 million.

Role and Objectives of NTB

  • Promote Research and Development of new turmeric products.
  • Explore value addition to turmeric-related products for international markets.
  • Leverage the medicinal value of turmeric extensively.

Challenges and Future Requirements

  • Farmers demand a Minimum Support Price (MSP) due to fluctuating prices, with recent figures showing a drop from ₹15,000-₹18,000 to ₹10,000 per quintal.
  • Robust infrastructure, including buildings, training, research and development centers, and budgetary allocations, is vital for the Board's effective functioning.
  • The Research Centre at Kammarpally could be integrated under the Board's purview to enhance research efforts.
