India's Military Space Doctrine
India is in the process of developing a "military space doctrine" expected to be released in two to three months, as announced by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on April 7, 2025. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the country's capabilities in space as a domain of warfare.
Space Sector Reforms
- India has undertaken significant reforms in its space sector.
- The Defence Space Agency is instrumental in these efforts, focusing on the establishment of a military space doctrine and a national military space policy.
Emerging Space Domain
General Chauhan highlighted the emergence of space as a new domain of warfare, urging the development of a "space culture" that includes:
- Developing doctrines
- Conducting research
- Establishing dedicated warfare schools
Satellite Constellation for Defence
- The government has approved a 52-satellite constellation for the defence sector.
- Out of these, 31 satellites will be constructed by the private sector in collaboration with ISRO.
- The satellites aim to enhance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.
Integrated Satellite Communication Grid
The Defence Space Agency is developing an integrated satellite communication grid to address current limitations and prepare for future space operations. This is vital for identifying potential threats to national security from both state and non-state actors, extending beyond space-based systems.
