India's Next-Generation Fighter Jet Programme

India is embarking on its biggest military research and development initiative with the launch of the Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. This ambitious project aims to develop a fifth-generation fighter jet to serve as India's primary aerial platform starting from the mid-2030s.

Competitive Model Approval

The defence ministry has approved a competitive model to encourage participation from both domestic private and public sector companies in collaboration with the government-owned Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) responsible for designing the jet.

• Indian companies, independently or in consortia, will bid to develop prototypes and proceed to serial production.
• First batch order: 120 fighter jets, with deliveries starting by 2035.
• Increased orders anticipated as advanced variants develop.

Selection and Participation

An official statement highlights the inclusive nature of the model, allowing both private and public sectors to compete independently or as joint ventures, provided they comply with Indian laws and regulations.
