India's Strategic Watch on Chabahar Port and INSTC Amid Israel-Iran Conflict

India is vigilantly monitoring potential impacts on the Chabahar Port and International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran. These projects are crucial for India's connectivity to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Russia.

Significance of Chabahar Port

  • Chabahar Port serves as a strategic gateway for India, facilitating access to landlocked regions like Afghanistan and Central Asia.
  • India has made significant investments in the port, including an $85 million investment for berth upgrades and a $150 million line of credit from Exim Bank.

India's Involvement and Investment

  • India entered a 10-year agreement with Iran for the management of Chabahar Port through India Ports Global Ltd. (IPGL).
  • IPGL is a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Kandla Port Trust, working in collaboration with Iran’s Aria Banader.

Regional Interest and Developments

  • The Taliban regime in Afghanistan is also focusing on Chabahar and considering joining the INSTC to lessen reliance on Pakistani ports.
  • Some Central Asian states have expressed interest in the Chabahar Port and INSTC.

While Israel has not targeted Iranian ports, reports of some hits along the Iranian coast have emerged, underscoring the delicate geopolitical dynamics in the region.
