Development of Designer Clownfish by NBFGR

Scientists at the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) have successfully developed designer clownfish through cross-breeding.

Research and Publication

  • Cross-breeding involved the species: 
    1. Amphiprion percula (male)
    2. Amphiprion ocellaris (female)
  • Research findings were published by scientists Ajith Kumar T.T. and P. R Divya in the journal Current Science.

Hatchery Production Technology

  • NBFGR has technology for hatchery production of over a dozen clownfish species using low saline water.
  • The designer clownfish were produced at the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre, Airoli, Mumbai.

Community Aquaculture Initiative

  • NBFGR collaborated with the Tribal Development department of the Tamil Nadu government for livelihood promotion.
  • Regions involved: 
    1. Pichavaram
    2. Pulicat
  • Designer clownfish will be propagated at Annamalai University and supplied to beneficiaries for rearing using a cluster mode approach.
  • This initiative aims to provide a promising economic return to the tribal community.
