Tejas Mark-1A Programme Boost
The indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark-1A (Mk1A) programme has gained momentum with a significant agreement.
Engine Supply Agreement
- Agreement Details: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a deal with General Electric (GE) for over 100 fighter jet engines for Mk1A aircraft.
- Engine Specifications: The agreement includes 113 F404-GE-IN20 engines and a support package.
- Timeline: Engine deliveries are scheduled from 2027 to 2032.
Tranche Details
- First Tranche: 83 Tejas Mk1A jets contracted for ₹36,400 crore, initially expected by February 2028.
- Delay Issue: HAL missed the February 2024 delivery deadline due to delays in F404 engines from GE Aerospace.
- Current Status: Around 10 Mk1A aircraft assembled, using reserve engines.
Future Deliveries
- Engine Supply Stabilization: Fourth engine delivered by GE, with the fifth expected by November.
- Indian Air Force (IAF) Status: No Mk1A received yet; deliveries post successful weapons-firing trials.
- Delivery Commitment: HAL plans to deliver 12 Mk1A aircraft by the end of 2025-26.
Second Tranche Details
- Order Placement: HAL received an order for 97 Mk1A aircraft including 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin-seat trainers.
- Contract Value: Exceeds ₹62,370 crore.
- Expected Timeline: Deliveries to start in 2027-28 and conclude over six years.
