Suspension of Indian Visa Operations in Chittagong

Indian visa operations in Chittagong, Bangladesh have been suspended indefinitely due to a security incident at the Assistant High Commission of India (AHCI). The suspension follows nationwide unrest in Bangladesh after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a protest leader against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government.

Context of the Unrest

  • Hadi, a candidate for the February 12 elections, was shot on December 12 and died on December 18.
  • His death led to widespread vandalism, including in Chittagong.

Indian Visa Application Centre's Response

  • Services are suspended from December 21, 2025, until further notice.
  • Resumption is contingent on local security assessments.

India's Diplomatic Response

India is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and is in contact with Bangladeshi authorities, expressing strong concerns about minority attacks.

  • Reports of a protest at Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi were addressed.
  • Claims of security breaches were refuted with visual evidence.

Incident in Mymensingh

On December 18, 27-year-old Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was beaten to death in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy.

  • 10 individuals have been arrested for the crime.
  • The interim Bangladeshi government is actively addressing the case.

Bangladesh's Reaction

  • Bangladesh rejected India's comments on the New Delhi protest, questioning security measures.
