Census 2027 Overview

India will conduct Census 2027, covering the entire country to provide critical demographic data. This will be a digital census, with enumerators collecting data via mobile applications. The process will facilitate self-enumeration, allowing citizens to input their data online at their convenience starting from April 1, 2026.

Self-Enumeration Details

  • Facility: A web-based platform allows citizens to provide household information online before an enumerator's visit.
  • Flexibility: Respondents can fill out the census schedule in any of 16 available languages.
  • Procedure: Respondents must check specific dates for self-enumeration for each State and Union Territory.

Significance of the Census

The census is a comprehensive administrative and statistical exercise managed by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Unlike elections, it occurs every ten years, although the 2021 census was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Phases and Questions

  • First Phase: Includes 33 questions on diverse topics such as the sex of the household head, cereal consumption, and the number of couples in a household.
  • Second Phase: Scheduled for February 2027, focusing on caste enumeration. Questions for this phase are yet to be notified.

Publication and Process

Most datasets from Census 2027 are expected to be published within the same year due to the digital nature of the census, which enhances data collection speed and processing efficiency.
