Introduction to Drunix

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced Drunix, an open-source blockchain platform aimed at supporting companies in developing and expanding tokenisation platforms, digital asset ecosystems, and multi-organisation networks.

Key Features of Drunix

  • Scalability: Drunix is designed for large-scale blockchain deployment, suitable for both enterprise and public infrastructure.
  • Foundation: It is an enhanced version of Hyperledger Fabric, a well-known open-source enterprise blockchain framework.
  • Objective: The platform aims to accelerate blockchain readiness by providing foundational technologies for experimentation, interoperability, and real-world adoption.

NPCI's Contributions to Blockchain and Tokenisation

  • Previous Contributions: Drunix is NPCI's second significant open-source contribution following Falcon, which focused on blockchain network management and orchestration.
  • Other Initiatives: NPCI has also introduced initiatives like the Finance Model for India (FiMI) and Vigil-AI.

Future Plans of NPCI

Beyond digital payments, NPCI is planning to enhance India's digital infrastructure by establishing a fourth subsidiary, NPCI Tech Solutions Ltd (NTSL). This move is intended to expand central infrastructure capabilities and explore new pilot projects.

Focus Areas for Expansion

  • Infrastructure-led products beyond payments, such as eKYC Setu.
  • Systems related to central bank digital currency.
