India-South Korea Shipbuilding Partnership

In April, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited India, marking the first visit by a Korean leader in eight years. This meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not only significant for reviving high-level political interactions but also crucial for expanding partnerships in strategic sectors.

Key Outcomes of the Visit

  • Revival of Shipbuilding Collaboration: The visit reinvigorated the slowly progressing shipbuilding partnership between India and South Korea, leading to several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements.
  • Strategic Sector Focus: Shipbuilding, being a strategic sector that India aims to revive, was a focal point of the visit.

Investments and Agreements

  • South Korean Industry Giants: The big three of South Korea's shipbuilding industry—Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and Hanwha Ocean—had previously announced their investment plans in India.
  • Government Commitment: President Lee’s visit underscored South Korea's strategic commitment to collaborating with India in the shipbuilding sector.
  • Hyundai's Involvement: A Hyundai subsidiary signed an MoU with Cochin Shipyard Limited, planning a $4 billion investment in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, for a green shipyard.
  • Partnerships: Samsung Heavy Industries partnered with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries to build ships in India.

These developments highlight India's increasing attractiveness as a shipbuilding destination for global companies, indicating a promising future for the India-South Korea partnership in this strategic industry.
