This vehicle emphasizes range efficiency with over 115km of electric-only range and a combined fuel efficiency of over 40kmpl, capable of covering over 1,100km with a full tank and charged battery.

Understanding Electric Vehicles (EVs)

An Electric Vehicle (EV) is powered by an electric motor drawing electricity from a rechargeable battery. Globally, EVs encompass:

  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): Fully electric, require external charging (e.g., Tesla Model S).

  • HEVs: Have a smaller battery charged by the ICE and regenerative braking; no external charging needed.
  • PHEVs: Include a larger battery that allows for external charging, providing a longer electric range.
  • Running costs for PHEVs are lower if regularly charged externally, despite higher initial costs.

The Role of Tomahawk in the EV Transition

The Tomahawk PHEV, built on MG’s ADAPT platform, bridges the gap between hybrids and BEVs. With a full range of 1,100 km, it caters to long-distance travelers who might otherwise choose diesel vehicles.

Challenges in EV Adoption

Charging infrastructure is a major hurdle for EV adoption. In the US, about 83% of EV charging is done at home, but 33% of consumers lack a home charger. In India, this gap affects EV penetration, making hybrids a feasible transitional technology.

  • Hybrids improve fuel efficiency and do not require extensive charging infrastructure, making them suitable for the transition phase towards full electrification.
  • However, they involve complex engineering and are more expensive due to the combination of ICE and electric systems.
