About Kumaraswami Kamaraj (1903 - 1975)

  • Born: Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu into a Nadar caste (depressed caste).
  • He became the Chief Minister of the then Madras Province in 1954

Key Contributions

  • Role in India’s Independence Movement
    • Became member of Indian National Congress.
    • Inspired to join the freedom struggle by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. 
    • Participated in Salt Satyagraha, Nagpur flag Satyagraha, and led the Sword Satyagraha and the Neil Statue Satyagraha. 
    • In 1942, he was jailed for three years for his involvement in Quit India Movement.
  • Elected to the Constituent Assembly from the Madras constituency.
  • Kamaraj Plan (1963): Set out a blueprint to rebuild the Congress party in the aftermath of the Indo-China war.
