IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7)

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) convened in Hangzhou, China, to draft the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) and a methodology report on carbon dioxide removal technologies. This meeting is crucial, particularly after record warm temperatures last year, which were about 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels, and the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.

Significance of AR7

  • AR7 aims to provide the latest scientific consensus on climate change.
  • It serves as a key resource for governments to develop climate policies and inform international negotiations.
  • Offers insights into:
    1. Physical science basis of climate change
    2. Impacts
    3. Adaptation strategies
    4. Mitigation options

Report Development and Timeline

Jim Skea, IPCC Chair, emphasized the importance of this session for delivering the next report. The IPCC releases major reports every five to seven years, with AR7 formally beginning in July 2023. It will include three key reports scheduled for release in late 2029:

  • Climate science
  • Climate impacts
  • Solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Special and Methodology Reports

Six months prior, the IPCC approved outlines for a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities and a Methodology Report on Short-Lived Climate Forcers. Author nominations and selections are in progress, with Lead Author Meetings to take place soon.

Challenges and Considerations

  • 195 member countries will discuss timelines and budgets for four reports during the session.
  • Some scientists advocate for a timeline that aligns with the Global Stocktake in 2028, but there are divisions over accelerated timelines.
  • Developing nations like Saudi Arabia, Russia, India, and China have expressed concerns about a shortened assessment process.
