Dr. Mathew Samuel Kalarickal

Mathew Samuel Kalarickal, an eminent cardiologist recognized as the ‘Father of Angioplasty’ in India, passed away on April 18, 2025, at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. He was 77 years old.

Contributions to Cardiology

  • Performed the first angioplasty in India in 1986.
  • Instrumental in establishing angioplasty facilities across the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Initially treated 18 patients in 1986, which increased to 150 by 1987.
  • Worked extensively to train doctors in India and other countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and several Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian nations.

  • Born on January 6, 1948, in Kerala.
  • Graduated from Kottayam Medical College.
  • Completed postgraduation and specialization in cardiology in Chennai.
  • Trained in the U.S. under Andreas Gruentzig, the ‘Father of Interventional Cardiology’.
