UNESCO Memory of the World Register

UNESCO has added 74 new documentary heritage collections to its Memory of the World Register, which now includes 570 inscribed collections globally. This addition includes significant contributions from India.

    • Recognized as a timeless philosophical and spiritual guide.
    • Translated into approximately 80 languages.
  • Bharat Muni's Natyashastra
    • A comprehensive treatise on dramaturgy, performance, aesthetics, and classical arts.
    • Considered one of the most detailed documents on theatre and performing traditions.

Global and National Significance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the inclusion as a recognition of India's timeless wisdom and rich culture. The Indian government sees this as a historic moment for the country's civilizational heritage.

UNESCO’s Statement and Efforts

UNESCO highlighted the importance of safeguarding documentary heritage, citing examples like the libraries of Chinguetti in Mauritania. The Memory of the World Programme, established in 1992, promotes the preservation and universal access to humanity’s documentary heritage.
