INS Udaygiri - Project 17A Stealth Frigate
The INS Udaygiri, part of India's growing military manufacturing capabilities, was delivered to the Indian Navy on July 1, 2025, enhancing its naval power. This vessel is the second ship in the series of Project 17A stealth frigates.
Project Overview
- Project 17A is a successor to the Shivalik class frigates of Project 17 (P-17).
- INS Udaygiri is the second of seven frigates being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata.
- The remaining five ships are expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.
Capabilities
- The frigates are designed for multi-mission operations in 'blue water' environments, addressing both conventional and non-conventional maritime threats.
- Udaygiri boasts enhanced stealth capabilities and is fitted with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor systems.
Weapons and Sensors
- The vessel is equipped with a supersonic surface-to-surface missile system and a medium-range surface-to-air missile system.
- It also features a 76 mm gun and a combination of 30 mm and 12.7 mm rapid-fire weapon systems.
