Next-Generation Submarine Construction in India
The Defence Ministry of India has made significant progress on a substantial project aimed at constructing next-generation conventional submarines within the country. This initiative involves Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
Project Progress and Details
- MDL has successfully qualified after technical trials and is advancing to the techno-commercial negotiation phase.
- A technical oversight committee has approved MDL's bid, following scrutiny of the bidding process and trials conducted in the previous year.
- The Navy had earlier expressed concerns about the requirement for a sea-proven air independent propulsion (AIP) system during trials.
Procurement Process
- Commercial bids submitted by MDL are to be opened next.
- Following bid evaluation, in-depth discussions on technical and commercial terms will be undertaken.
- The proposal, estimated at ₹43,000 crore, will seek approval from competent authorities post-discussions.
Project Expectations and Capabilities
- The project involves building six submarines in India with significant technology transfer.
- The first submarine is anticipated to enter service approximately seven years post-contract signing.
- The new submarines will feature an AIP system, enabling them to remain submerged for up to two weeks, thereby enhancing stealth capabilities.
