India-U.S. Defence Cooperation and Apache Helicopters
Following the discussions between the U.S. and India, the delivery of Apache combat helicopters is imminent.
Apache Helicopters Delivery
- The first batch of three Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States will be delivered by July 15, 2025.
- The second batch is scheduled for November 2025.
- The delivery is part of a $600 million deal signed in 2020, experiencing delays due to supply chain issues, originally planned for May-June 2024.
Defence Ministers' Engagement
- Defence Minister discussed the delivery of Apache helicopters and other defence cooperation with U.S. Defence Secretary on July 1, 2025.
- Discussion included Operation Sindoor where emphasis was placed on India’s right to pre-empt and deter cross-border terror attacks.
Additional Defence Collaborations
- India is awaiting U.S.-made General Electric engines for the Tejas light combat-Mk1A aircraft.
- Plans to set up a production unit for jet engines in India are underway, with the U.S. ensuring timely delivery.
Strategic Importance and Future Framework
- The Apache helicopters will strengthen India’s western border defences and enhance Army Aviation Corp’s capabilities.
- The U.S. Department of Defence emphasizes India as a key defence partner in South Asia, highlighting substantial progress in defence cooperation.
- Both nations agreed to sign the next ten-year U.S.-India Defence Framework in their forthcoming meeting.
