Census 2027 Overview
The government has sanctioned Rs 11,718 crore for conducting the Census 2027, marking the first digital exercise of its kind. This decision was approved in a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Phases of the Census
- The Census will occur in two phases:
- Houselisting and Housing Phase: Scheduled between April and September 2026.
- Population Enumeration: Planned for February 2027, with exceptions for certain regions conducted in September 2026.
Key Features and Innovations
- First Digital Census: Emphasizes data protection.
- Conducted by 30 lakh field functionaries.
- Will include caste enumeration in the second phase, a significant addition decided by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs.
Data Collection
The Census will gather information on various socio-economic parameters including:
- Housing condition, amenities, and assets.
- Demography, religion, SC & ST status, language, literacy.
- Economic activity, migration, and fertility.
Technological Advancements
- Data collection via mobile applications available for Android and iOS.
- A Census Management & Monitoring System (CMMS) portal for real-time management.
- A Houselisting Block (HLB) Creator web map application for Charge Officers.
- Public option to self-enumerate.
