Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Nuclear Power Project (MBRAPP)
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has given its consent for the commencement of excavation activities for the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Nuclear Power Project (MBRAPP) units one and two.
Development and Ownership
- The project will be developed by Anushakti Vidyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI).
- ASHVINI is a joint venture between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and NTPC Limited.
- The joint venture aims to build, own, and operate nuclear power plants in India.
Project Approval and Consent History
- The excavation consent was granted following an earlier consent issued to NPCIL in May 2025 for MBRAPP Units 1-4.
- The consent was transferred to ASHVINI in September 2025.
Technical Specifications
- Units one and two of MBRAPP will feature a 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) design.
- PHWRs utilize natural uranium as fuel and heavy water (deuterium oxide) as both coolant and moderator.
Project Milestones and Cost
- The foundation stone for MBRAPP was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2025 in Banswara, Rajasthan.
- The total project cost is projected to be Rs 42,000 crore.
