Understanding Wet Bulb Temperature

Wet bulb temperature is a crucial environmental measure that combines heat and humidity to assess how the environment impacts the human body. Unlike the regular temperature readings found in weather apps, this measure provides a more accurate reflection of environmental stress on humans.

Impact of Humidity

  •  According to Dr. Sundar Krishnan, during periods of extreme humidity, the body struggles to cool due to inefficient sweat evaporation. This can make temperatures in the mid-30s feel dangerous.
  • Risks:
    • Dehydration
    • Heat exhaustion
    • Muscle cramps
    • Dizziness
    • Heatstroke in severe cases
  • Warning Signs:
    • Persistent fatigue
    • Intense thirst
    • Headache
    • Nausea
    • Confusion
    • Rapid heartbeat
    • Excessive sweating followed by dry skin
    • Reduced urination

Vulnerable Groups

Dr. Harish Chafle warns that high wet-bulb temperatures are particularly dangerous for older adults, children, outdoor workers, and individuals with heart or kidney issues.

Measurement Techniques

  •  Traditionally measured using a thermometer wrapped in a wet cloth.
  •  Modern methods involve calculations using humidity, air temperature, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure.

Preventive Measures

  • Maintain hydration and replenish electrolytes.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
  • Wear loose, cotton clothing.
  • Stay in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Use fans or air conditioning when possible.

Note: Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.

Minerals in the body, such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, that are crucial for nerve and muscle function, as well as maintaining hydration and blood pressure. They are often lost through sweat and need to be replenished.

Heatstroke

A severe and life-threatening heat-related illness where the body's temperature regulation fails. Symptoms include a high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness. It requires immediate medical attention.

Heat Exhaustion

A condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures, characterized by symptoms like heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. It is a precursor to heatstroke.
