India achieved a record high in seafood exports, reaching a volume of 1.97 million tonnes worth $8.46 billion in FY26. This was despite the sector facing various challenges, as reported by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA).

  • The United States and China were the primary importers of Indian seafood.
  • Frozen shrimp and fish were the leading export items.

Export Growth

  • Volume increased by 16.13%.
  • Value increased by 18.4% in rupee terms and 13.44% in dollar terms.
  • There was a decline in the unit value by 2.31% to $4.29 per kg.

Frozen Shrimp

  • Constituted 40.19% of total exports by quantity.
  • The largest importers were the US, followed by China, the European Union, South East Asia, Japan, and West Asia.
  • L vannamei was the most traded variety, followed by the Black Tiger shrimp.

Other Seafood Exports

  • Exports of scampi declined in both volume and value.
  • Frozen fish was the second-largest export item in value, with increased exports in quantity and value but a decrease in unit value by 1.23% to $1.81 per kg.
