Theme for 2026 is “Global Action for a Cooler Planet” with this year also marking 10th anniversary of Kigali Amendment to Montreal Protocol.
- On the occasion, India launched Net Zero Portal as centralised digital platform for voluntary disclosure of Net Zero commitments by Indian entities and NAPCC (National Action Plan on Climate Change) Dashboard.
About Ozone Layer
- Ozone Layer: Often described as “Earth’s umbrella”, it acts as a protective shield, blocking harmful UV radiation from sun.
- Ozone-Depleting Substances(ODS): Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs), methyl bromide, halons, and methyl chloroform.
Measures to Tackle Ozone Layer Depletion
- Vienna Convention: Took effect in 1988 and reached universal ratification in 2009.
- Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete Ozone Layer: Adopted in 1987, one of the rare treaties to achieve universal ratification.
- Kigali Amendment to Montreal Protocol: Adopted in 2016 to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) [HFCs are non-ozone depleting but have huge Global Warming Potential].
