In Summary

  • The WHO & IARC report highlights 20.6M new cancer cases & 10M deaths annually, with Asia bearing the largest burden.
  • At least 45% faced financial hardship, and significant inequities exist in survival rates between high- and low-income countries.
  • Recommendations include public-private partnerships, people-centered control agendas, and strengthened multilateralism for cancer control.

In Summary

Released by World Health Organisation and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), it is the first ever survey of people affected by cancer.

Key Highlights of the Report

  • Global Burden: Estimated as 20.6 million new cases and 10 million deaths annually.
    • Cancer remains the second leading cause of death globally, after cardiovascular disease.
    • Annual cancer cases are projected to rise to ~35 million by 2050.
    • Lung cancer remains leading cause of cancer death globally.
  • Regional Burden:  Asia accounted for largest share, with more than half of all cancer cases (50.7%) and deaths (56.5%).
    • Europe witnessed disproportionately high burden (21% of global cases and 9% of global population).
  • Financial Burden: At least 45% of surveyed people reported financial hardship, leading to medical bankruptcy.

Persisting Gaps

  • Systemic challenges: Political commitments are not adequately linked to domestic spending increases; Siloed cancer-type strategies along with weak accountability.
  • Inequitable Impact: 87% of women with breast cancer survive at 5 years after diagnosis in high-income countries while only 42% in case of low income countries.
  • Limited Progress: E.g., Coverage with first dose of human papillomavirus (HPV) among girls stand around 31% far from the target of 90% by 2030.

Key Recommendations

  • Public–Private partnerships: Private sector to provide technical, scientific and strategic resources while public sector contributes to national cancer control planning.
  • People-Centred Control agenda: By deploying three strategic shifts, viz, Better capabilities (invest in human capital), Better Protection (Strengthening social protection); Better value (targeted research).
  • Multilateralism:  Fostering international collaboration, equity in decision-making, and sustained commitments.
