The National Technical Textiles Mission’s Empowered Programme Committee has approved 2 Start-Ups under GREAT scheme.
- It has also approved a grant to 6 education institutes to introduce courses in Technical Textiles under ‘General Guidelines for Enabling of Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles’.
About Technical Textiles
- Definition: Technical textiles are defined as textile materials & products used primarily for their technical performance & functional properties rather than their aesthetic/decorative characteristics.
- They are manufactured using natural & man-made fibres (Nomex, Kevlar, Spandex etc).
- Applications: Agriculture, sports, health, packaging, construction, aerospace etc.
Significance for India
- Sunrise Sector: Technical textiles market growing at a rate of 8-10 % per annum & stood at USD21.95 billion in 2021-22 (5th largest market in world).
- It accounts for approximately 13% of India’s total textile & apparel market and contributes to India’s GDP at 0.7%.
- Export Potential: India’s exports of technical textile products grew from USD2.21 billion in 2020-21 to USD2.85 billion in 2021-22, registering a growth rate of 28.4%.
- Agriculture: Agro-textiles in horticulture increases farm productivity by 2-5 times, reduce water consumption by 30- 45% & fertilizer usage by 25- 30%.
