India's Port Transformation
India aims to transform its major ports to operate under the landlord port model by 2047, as announced by Sarbanada Sonowal, the union ports, shipping, and waterways minister.
Current and Future Port Operations
- Major ports, governed by the central government, handle approximately half of India's maritime trade.
- The move involves shifting 100% of cargo handling to public-private partnerships (PPP) by 2047.
- Currently, around 60% of domestic cargo is managed by PPP port terminal operators.
- This share is expected to rise to 85% by 2030.
- Ports will implement just in time arrival systems and smart port technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce turnaround time.
Green Logistic Hubs and Green Hydrogen Initiatives
- Ports are emerging as green logistic hubs.
- Development of green hydrogen hubs is underway, with over 12 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen-based e-fuel capacity announced.
- Indian ports are evolving into centers for green hydrogen production, bunkering, and exports.
- This transformation is expected to create jobs and drive industrial growth.
