This was the first ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine, since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in the year 1992.

Key highlights of the Visit

  • Signed four agreements and MoUs 
    • Cooperation in the fields of Agriculture and Food Industry.
    • Humanitarian Grant Assistance for implementation of High Impact Community Development Projects
    • Cultural cooperation and an agreement on medicines and drugs, tec. 
  • Provided four BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita & Maitri) Cubes
    • Each BHISHM Cube consists of medicines and equipment for the first line of care for all kinds of injuries and medical situations.

Significance of India’s Ukraine Visit

  • India’s strategic autonomy at display: The visit shows India’s view of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict is independent from that of Russia.
    • India’s attempt to de-hyphenate Russia and Ukraine relations.
    • For decades, India’s policy was to maintain equal distance from all countries under policy of Non-Alignment. Now, India’s policy is to maintain close ties with all countries.
  • India's Eastern European Pivot: India expands engagement with Ukraine, Poland, and Greece, aligning with Europe's peace efforts in the region.
    • Visit also signifies India’s larger Europe push. Earlier countries like Russia, Germany, France, and Britain were given preference. 

Significance  of India-Ukraine ties

  • Agriculture: Pre-war Ukraine was among the biggest sources of sunflower oil for India.
  • Defence: In 2021, Ukraine has signed four agreements worth $70 million which includes sale of new weapons as well as maintenance and upgrades of existing ones in service with the Indian armed forces. 
  • Post-war recovery: Both agreed to explore the possibility of involvement of Indian companies in Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery. 
  • Other: Medical education opportunities, etc. 

India’s Stand on Ukraine-Russia Conflict

  • India advocated for peaceful resolution of Conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
  • Also, asserted that India is not neutral. From the very beginning, we have taken sides. And we have chosen the side of peace.
