Recently, ‘Bharat GI’ was unveiled at India AI impact summit. 

About Bharat GI 

  • It is a national umbrella initiative to showcase India’s unique GI products to the globe.
  • Launched by: Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of commerce
  • Benefits: provides stronger international recognition, premium positioning, and market access for Indian artisans and farmers.

Researchers have identified inscriptions in Tamil Brahmi script in Valley of the Kings in Egypt belonging to 1st and 3rd Centuries C.E. shedding light on ancient trade links. 

  • It mentions names of trader in Tamil Brahmi script eg. Cikai Korran (Crown Leader), Kopan, Catan, Kiraṉ. 
  • Korran is also mentioned in Sangam literature where a Chera king is directly addressed as koṟṟaṉ. 

About Tamil Brahmi Script

  • A variant of Brahmi script used to write the ancient Tamil inscriptions. 
  • Period: 300 BC and 100 AD. 
  • Greatest Work: Thirukkural. 

President of India inaugurated the centenary celebrations of the ol chiki script.

About Ol Chiki Script

  • Developed in 1925 by Raghunath Murmu, specifically for the Santhali language.
  • Transitioned Santhali from oral to written tradition.
    • Before Ol Chiki, Santhali was written using Roman, Bengali, Odia, Devanagari script.

About Santhali Language

  • Belongs to Austroasiatic language family.
  • Spoken in: Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and parts of Nepal & Bangladesh
  • Included in the Eighth Schedule via 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003.

DPIIT

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. This department of the Indian government plays a crucial role in facilitating business and investment in the country, including managing portals like NSWS for business registrations.

Geographical Indication (GI)

A sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. It is regulated under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999, and is granted for 10 years, renewable thereafter.

Bharat GI

A national umbrella initiative launched by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to globally showcase India's unique Geographical Indication (GI) products. It aims to provide stronger international recognition, premium positioning, and market access for Indian artisans and farmers.
